Ask and you shall receive! After expressing interest in joining the Fast and Furious franchise last year, Helen Mirren appears to have gotten her wish. Speaking to Elle about her latest film, Eye in the Sky, Mirren casually dropped the news that she would be joining Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and the rest of the crew in the upcoming 8th installment of the series:
“I want to be making film and theater, but film is particularly relevant. I like it to be serious. Of course, having said that I’m about to do Fast and Furious 8. But that’s for the fun of it. So maybe that’s what I want as well, some fun and some relevant, serious, important movies.”
And it sounds like Mirren is eager to get behind the wheel of some of the franchise’s signature vehicles, as she elaborated:
“I’ve always rather loved driving. I said, ‘I’ll be in it, but only if I’m allowed to drive if I do drive in it.’ But we’ll see. We’ll see how it transpires.”
Known mostly for her dramatic roles, such as her Oscar-winning performance in 2006′s The Queen, Mirren was apparently bitten by the action bug after starring in Red and its sequel. She first talked about her goal to join the Fast and Furious series last year during a chat with Yahoo:
“My great ambition is to be in a Fast and Furious movie. I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie. My claim to fame is I always do my own driving — I was on Top Gear, and I did [my lap] in a very good time. I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me. I’ll be in Fast and Furious 8. I have to say Vin Diesel is brilliant. I love Vin Diesel. He’s a great guy, smart — I love him. It’s partly because of him I’d like to be in one, but also the driving.”
Details about Mirren’s specific role have not been revealed, but it’s been speculated that she could be the mother of Owen (Luke Evans) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), the villains who have tormented Dom (Diesel) and his crew in the past two films. Personally, I’m hoping to see her engage in some hand-to-hand combat with The Rock, but that’s probably just wishful thinking on my part.
Fast and Furious 8 will hit theaters on April 14, 2017.
