ICYMI: ESPN The Magazine’s Annual “Body Issue” Features Marvel’s Best And Buffest

By July 16, 2015

Released at the same time as Comic-Con, you may have missed this epic collaboration between Marvel Comics and sister company ESPN’s ESPN The Magazine featuring some of your favorite superheroes (and heroines).

As ESPN The Magazine represents a “visual celebration of athleticism, dedication and strength,” they finally paired up with some of Marvel’s best and brightest artists to show us what Ant-Man, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Medusa, Luke Cage, and Iron Man look like stripped down while “honoring and illustrating the male and female form through detailed anatomical drawings.”

“While The Body Issue itself celebrates the unique characteristics of each athlete’s physique, we thought it made perfect sense to extend this theme to these Marvel characters,” says ESPN The Magazine Deputy Editor Otto Strong.

Marvel Comics artist Sara Pichelli was delighted to be a part of the team. “For a comic book artist drawing the human anatomy is an everyday job, but here it was matter of celebrating the maximum expression of human muscles and shapes. Creating believable, powerful, and at the same time harmonic bodies is always a challenge, that’s why I wanted to be part of this.”

Marvel’s EIC Axel Alonso agrees.

When comic book artists imagine the physical ideal, they have to start somewhere, and let’s face it: professional athletes, whose bodies are fine-tuned instruments, are the closest thing to real-life Super Heroes. Marvel’s Body Issue insert is a celebration of the most iconic Super Heroes in the world and the athletes that inspired them.

ESPN.com also has a BTS digital sketchbook where you can see each finished work’s progression “from page to stage” by using the red slider located in the center of the page!

I really, really loved this — hope you do, too!
