When Disney acquired the rights to Lucasfilm and all of its franchises, the studio managed to take control of two iconic movie properties in Star Wars and Indiana Jones. While we’re only a few days away from the highly-anticipated release of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which will mark a new age in the franchise’s history as Disney begins to release more and more, original Star Wars content – the future of the Jones franchise has been much more ambiguous.
Producer Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg just recently debunked the rumors that Disney would be recasting another actor in Ford’s place though, confirming that the legendary actor would be reprising his iconic role. However, not much noise has been made about when fans can look forward to another installment in the beloved franchise, or what progress has been made up until this point.
While recently speaking with The Hollywood Reporter though, Kathleen Kennedy provided a much-needed update on Indiana Jones 5, confirming that the main players would be returning:
“We’re all trying to figure out when the right time is to step back in. Harrison really wants to do it; Steven really wants to do it. We’ve kicked around a couple of story ideas, but beyond that, I don’t know yet. I think there will be one, we’ll certainly move forward with Indy. But right now, everybody’s just focused on Star Wars.”
This sort of fits in line with many of the previous comments made by those working behind the scenes, and considering how deep into the Star Wars future Kennedy in particular has been over the past few years, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that she might want to make sure and get that property on its feet again, before working on bringing Jones back as well.
It sounds more and more like Steven Spielberg will be coming back to direct the fifth installment with Ford set to return as well, with the next installment acting as a kind of passing-the-torch ceremony to whoever will be headlining the franchise when Ford finally hangs up his fedora and bull whip. There’s been no word for certain on who Indy could be passing that torch too, although Chris Pratt seems to be the go-to choice for a number of fans. For right now though, it looks like we’re still far away from any real updates on the Indiana Jones franchise, and until then, I guess Star Wars will have to fill both of those gaps. Something tells me that won’t be much of a problem for the fans too.
Indiana Jones 5 is currently in development.
