J.J. Abrams’ so-called “mystery box” has been sealed up predictably tight when it comes to information about Star Wars Episode VII — we still don’t know what the film’s official title is, for goodness sakes — but that’s nothing compared to the information flow regarding the planned standalone features. As of now, we only know that there will be “multiple” standalone features that will focus on various characters from the Star Wars universe and that Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank are on board to direct two of them. Beyond that, we’ve got very little information to go on, including the most basic question of all: who are these films going to actually be about?
Since the films were announced, rumors have swirled as to who we can expect to see getting their very own story, with names like Yoda, Han Solo (perhaps with Chewie), and Boba Fett getting tossed around. But how about Obi-Wan Kenobi?
MakingStarWars indicates that could certainly happen. MSW’s source tells them:
Obi-Wan Kenobi – I’ve heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works. For the spin-off movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters. But I’m hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website etc) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie.
As the /Film team shares, “the official site voting mentioned there is the recent This is Madness Tournament, where Kenobi was voted the top character of all Star Wars characters including Han Solo, Boba Fett, Yoda, even Darth Vader.” The top character! Over Han Solo!
What’s also interesting about this bit of buzz is the reveal that “they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters,” which gives credence to the rumors that we’ll see Han Solo and Boba Fett films, while also indicating that all our Yoda hopes and dreams may be dashed.
What standalone films do you want to see? Is Obi-Wan on the top of your list? Or are you still holding out for a Jabba the Hutt origin story? Perhaps a look at how the Cantina band first got together?
