Although most of Hollywood’s current “but who will direct it?” chatter is quite firmly aimed at Ant-Man (answer as of now? we still don’t know!), there is another beloved property that’s been kicked around for years and desperately needs someone to pop in to helm it, if only to prove to the world that this project is going to happen.
We’re talking, of course, about Ghostbusters 3. So, who they gonna call? Well, at this point, it seems they’ve called just about everyone — and some good picks, too! — but last we heard about the perpetual sequel-in-the-making, The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller had passed on the project. Who is up next? According to The Wrap, it’s Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer.
The outlet reports that Fleischer is kinda-sorta “in the mix” for the Ant-Man job (coincidence!), but that he’s also “being considered” to direct Ghostbusters 3, which would bring him back to Sony, the same studio that he directed his last big comedic outings, both Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less, for, which would certainly be a nice reunion.
But is that enough of an incentive to get Fleischer, who hasn’t directed a feature film since the 2013 mess that was Gangster Squad, to relinquish any possible control over a biggie like Ant-Man? Turns out, there might be something else at play, as The Wrap speculates that Fleischer, who recently welcomed a new baby into the world with his wife, “may be reluctant to take a demanding gig that will require such a big commitment.”
Ghostbusters 3, which will likely involve just as much of a commitment, is still not ready to go into production, so the thinking here appears to be that Fleischer would wait until that film is ready to get back to work. This seems like a bit of a speculative stretch, but as is the case with news like this, we’ll eventually know the answer. Someone will direct Ant-Man (probably?). Someone will direct Ghostbusters 3 (maybe?). Perhaps Ruben Fleischer will be one of those directors.
Who would you like to see direct Ant-Man? What about Ghostbusters 3?
