1996’s Trainspotting was a commercial and critical success that launched the careers of stars Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle. In the nearly twenty years since its release, rumors of a sequel have come and gone, teasing fans with the possibility of further shenanigans with the film’s four heroin-loving lead characters. For anyone who may have already given up hope, get ready to be very happy. Trainspotting 2 is officially happening (via Variety)!
Director Danny Boyle and screenwriter John Hodge will reunite with McGregor, Miller, Carlyle, and Ewen Bremner for the sequel, which will be produced by TriStar Pictures. It’s set for release in 2017, 21 years after the original first hit theaters. Hodge’s screenplay follows Irvine Welsh’s literary sequel to Trainspotting entitled Porno, and according to Carlyle:
“It’s one of the best scripts I’ve f—ing read.”
No word yet on whether Kelly Macdonald’s Dianne will appear in the film, but the character does have a small role in Porno. Keep those fingers crossed.
While at first this can be seen as another empty Hollywood sequel, the fact that the original director, screenwriter, and cast are all returning should set fans’ minds at ease. Everyone involved has a serious love for the characters and their story, so this will be handled with as much care as the original film. Not only are we getting a sequel to Trainspotting, but it’ll actually (probably, hopefully) be really good! This is good news, folks. This is very good news.
Trainspotting 2 opens in theaters some time in 2017.
