J.J. Abrams is the kind of guy, that in addition to directing the seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise, has his hands in a million different properties and projects all at the same time. This year alone, Abrams has executive produced a number of notable TV shows and films, including 10 Cloverfield Lane, Roadies, 11.22.63, Star Trek Beyond, and the upcoming Westworld TV series on HBO, which has more hype going behind it than practically any other freshman show this year.
Abrams has been long at work on bringing a number of notable video game film adaptations to life over the years as well though, and during a recent interview at the Westworld premiere, Abrams provided a much-needed update on the Portal film he’s working on.
Speaking with IGN, Abrams teased an announcement for the video game adaptation coming sometime hopefully soon:
“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon.”
While he couldn’t divulge many details about the project though, Abrams did talk briefly about the team he’s begun assembling for it:
“We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.”
Abrams’ interest in making a Portal film has been well-known for sometime, and as the producer-extraordinaire that he is, all we can do is hope that we’ll get to see the world of Portal brought to the silver screen in some way sometime in the next few years it looks like.
For what it’s worth though, Abrams did recently work with director Dan Trachtenberg on 10 Cloverfield Lane earlier this year, a filmmaker that initially made a name for himself after making that incredible Portal short film from a couple years ago. So at least there’s that.
There’s no current release date on a Portal movie, but the Abrams-produced Westworld will be premiering on HBO this Sunday, October 2nd.
