“Star Wars Rebels” is another critically acclaimed animated series from the same minds that brought the infinitely enjoyable “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” exploring the climate of the galaxy far, far away in the five years preceding the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In season one, we got only a couple of sparing looks at Darth Vader, the fallen Jedi formerly known as Anakin Skywalker who would cast a dark pall over the entirety of the original Star Wars trilogy. In the episodes of “Rebels” that Vader appeared in, fan minds the world over were blown when it was revealed that James Earl Jones himself would be returning to provide the famous voice to the iconic character.
This weekend at the Star Wars Celebration, a new trailer for “Star Wars Rebels” season two was released, prominently featuring the Dark Lord of the Sith along with a voice that sounds uncanny to the original voice of those first three films. See it below.
According to ComicBook.com, the voice in the trailer, and in the forthcoming episodes, indeed belongs to Jones. Executive and supervising producer of the show, Dave Filoni, spoke at Celebration about getting Jones into the booth to provide new dialogue for Vader, and the story he tells is pretty charming. Because Jones is so effective at embodying Vader, Filoni called the job of directing the 84-year old actor “incredibly easy.”
[Jones] said to me, ‘David, I haven’t done this in ten years, can you remind me how?’ and I said, ‘No, you’re doing it! You’re doing it right now!
Vader will apparently appear in several episodes across the season hot on the trail of Jedi Knight Kanan and his new apprentice, Ezra. With the recent appearance of “Clone Wars” favorite character Ahsoka Tano on the series, who served as the apprentice to Anakin Skywalker in the period between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, Filoni teased that an eventual confrontation between she and Vader is “part of the story we have to tell.”
“Star Wars Rebels” season 2 will likely bow on Disney XD sometime this fall. For more on Star Wars as it takes shape, keep a tab open to GeekNation.
