James Gunn and Vin Diesel Talk ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

By September 4, 2016

One of the highlights of Marvel’s huge presentation on the Hall H stage at San Diego Comic-Con was an extended look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, featuring a lengthy scene where Baby Groot helped the rest of the team break out of a detainment facility. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, and on Friday director James Gunn decided to give the voice of Groot himself, Vin Diesel, his first look at some completed footage from the sequel.

In typical Vin Diesel fashion, the actor immediately took to Facebook Live to share his excitement. “Oh my God, you guys” he repeatedly gushes in the video. “I need a minute here.” When he finally manages to compose himself, he says:

“I’m here at Disney, and I’m here with my friend James Gunn. And it’s weird having a friend like James Gunn, because he’s your friend – and then you watch what he does and you go ‘my friend’s a genius.’ Not just great in a particular profession, but a genius. Someone that literally takes a hundred-plus blank pages and creates something that blows your mind.”

With a reaction like that, it’s safe to say that Diesel is pleased with the direction that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is heading in, and after several minutes of singing Gunn’s praises – deservedly so – Gunn himself chimed in to discuss how the sequel’s themes will differ from the original film:

“The first movie was really about becoming a family. This movie is about being a family. And what’s harder, becoming a family or being a family? I think it’s being a family. That’s where you really haven’t to deal with each other. And that’s what this movie is about. And their sisters. They are family, whether they like it or not. And they also want to kill each other, so it adds a new twist to being a sister.”

Gunn also revealed (via his Twitter account) that he created a special version of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 screenplay – a version that only he and Diesel possess – where every line of Groot’s dialogue is printed in English in order to give Diesel an idea of what Groot is trying to communicate in each scene. Here’s a sneak peek:

With Marvel’s Doctor Strange heading to theaters this fall, we’re hoping to get a new trailer for Guardians Vol. 2 around the same time – of course, if it happens to arrive sooner than November, we’re certainly not going to complain.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will blast its way into theaters on May 5, 2017.
