At the Saturn Awards this week, director James Gunn opened up a little bit about the in-development sequel to last year’s blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name, and one of the films in “Phase Three” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking with Collider, Gunn talked about how he expects the sequel to aim a bit more at the heartstrings of viewers than the first film did, and what some of the overall thematic aims are as he continues to prepare the screenplay.
I think it’s a more emotional movie. It’s both a bigger movie and a smaller movie because we focus more intensely on some of the characters.
Gunn also discussed how the film will add to the ever-expanding tapestry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and gave a hint as to some of the revelations that will be coming to light as it relates to certain characters, most notably Peter Quill/Star-Lord. He noted that audiences will learn “a lot about fathers” in the upcoming second film, since the question of Star-Lord’s parentage was left pretty wide open by the conclusion of the original. In the past, Gunn has also hinted that Star-Lord’s father in the films could even surprise comic book fans, who are a bit more aware of Star-Lord’s history and who his parents are.
Gunn finished his comments on the second film by hinting at what the follow-up to the popular “Awesome Mix” — the film’s soundtrack — will have in store, since volume 1 was so well-received.
We haven’t listened to ‘Awesome Mix 2,’ yet, so we get to hear it in the sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is slated to be released on May 5th, 2017. It will be the third film in the MCU’s “Phase Three,” following 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange. For more on the sequel as it develops, keep a tab open to GeekNation!
