James Wan Says He’s “Finished with the Horror Genre”

By September 16, 2013

This is not a drill…director James Wan has confirmed that The Conjuring & Insidious 2 are his last two horror films EVER.

Wan carved out a name for himself in the horror genre when he and best friend/writing partner Leigh Whannell decided to go out on their own and make the 2004 hit Saw by taking his two most base level fears (clowns and puppets/ventriloquist dummies) to create Billy (below), the mouthpiece for serial killer/lesson-giver Jigsaw that spawned ONE good (Saw III) and a few bad sequels as well as a bunch of films that WISH they were as good as that first Saw.

But now that Wan’s dipping his toes in the action genre with Fast And Furious 7 as well as an “untitled thriller,” he’s ready to close the door on horror and try different things.

In a recent interview with Moviefone, Wan said, “I’m going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. The Conjuring and Insidious 2 are my two last scary movies. I spent the last ten years of my life doing this. It’s time for a change, for goodness sake!”

He has a valid argument of not being pigeonholed into being known as “that horror guy” when it comes to directing:

“Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you’re know as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I’m a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films.”

While slightly sad, I have no problems with this; let’s remember James Gunn AND Joss Whedon’s first forays into the film world were also horror-based, and where are they now? Directing big-ass budget Marvel films, that’s where they are.

So dry your tears, darlings, and let’s support James rather than mourn him; I know he has MY blessing!

(And if he decides to come back to horror someday, I’ll welcome him with open arms.)
