Jemaine Clement Returning to HBO But Not for ‘Flight of the Conchords’

When the HBO musical comedy series “Flight of the Conchords” ended in 2009, it felt like it was over all too soon. But crafting a musical series with original songs has to be pretty difficult. Thankfully, though, one of the bandmates is returning to HBO.

Jemaine Clement was speaking with The Guardian, promoting the release of his indie vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows, and he revealed that he and the film’s co-director Taika Waititi are working on a new four-episode series at HBO. But no details beyond that were revealed at all. The series was supposed to happen this year, but then Clement and Waititi decided to release the aforementioned Sundance-selected film themselves.

Waititi also starred with Clement in What We Do in the Shadows, not to mention co-writing the script with him, and also previously worked with the New Zealand native as the director of Eagle vs. Shark and also a few episodes of “Flight of the Conchords.” Is there a chance they could be working on a series adaptation of their vampire film? Clement has confirmed it won’t be a revival of the concluded folk musical comedy, so that’s a bummer.

What We Do in the Shadows

It’s hard to say, and one would think that if it was tied to the film, he would have mentioned it in order to get the indie release more attention, but just the prospect of a new HBO comedy with Clement and Waititi involved is enticing. And we also hope that there’s something for Bret McKenzie to do. Both Clement and McKenzie have been busy individually with various projects from The Muppets to Rio, but it would be nice to have them working together again.

On a hopeful note, Clement hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a “Flight of the Conchords” reunion at some point. Clement also told The Guardian, “We talk about a movie every so often…sometimes it feels like we lost a lot of impetus over the last couple of years. But Bret, James [Bobin] and me, we all want to do a musical. It would be good to do something all together. I miss playing Flight of the Conchords gigs.” Stay tuned.
