2016’s third Captain America film from Marvel Studios looks like it’s shaping up to be Avengers 2.5, especially now that the film has added yet another member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to the cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Renner will be reprising his role of Clint Barton/Hawkeye in Captain America: Civil War this Spring before joining Amy Adams for a film called Story of Your Life, a sci-fi drama film also slated to release in 2016. Renner’s addition to the next Captain America film will reunite him with the majority of the original Avengers cast, including Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanov/Black Widow, and of course, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America. Also returning in this film are Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts of Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, as well as the new Spider-Man, who has yet to be cast.
The film looks like it’ll be taking some liberties with the original comics material, as many of the prominent characters appearing in the film had minimal or no part in the Civil War comic book arc from 2006-07. Both Falcon and Winter Soldier did play a part in “The Drums of War,” the tie-in story to Civil War published in Captain America (vol. 5) #22-24, and that culminated with Steve’s death in issue #25, so there’s certainly a precedent for those characters’ involvement in Captain America’s life while Civil War was taking place.
Still, the Civil War film is shaping up to be an all-star Marvel affair well before the next Avengers film, The Infinity War – Part 1, is scheduled to hit theaters. It’s anyone’s guess what trajectory it will set for the characters upon it’s release, but it should prove exciting to see how the groundwork is laid for this film at the end of Age of Ultron this May.
Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to open in theaters on May 6th, 2016. For more on the film as it develops, keep an eye on GeekNation!
