When Toy Story 3 ended, fans (alongside Disney and Pixar) thought that would be the end of the award-winning franchise. But then again, we ARE talking Disney and Pixar…which means NOTHING is “final.”
News comes down the wire from THR that not only is there going to be a Toy Story 4 with Disney and Pixar CCO John Lasseter (Toy Story, Cars, A Bug’s Life, you name it) directing, it — according to Pixar president Jim Morris — will be a “love story” and not “about the characters interacting with kids.”
And — as Morris stresses — TS4 is NOT a continuation but a whole new story ENTIRELY.
“It’s not a continuation of the end of Toy Story 3. Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. The focus is not going to be placed on the interaction between the characters and children. The third film had ended in a very beautiful way and completed the trilogy. I think this film won’t be part of that trilogy. It’s a separate story, which I don’t know if it will have a sequel.”
With Rashida Jones (“Parks and Recreation”) and writing partner Will McCormack as the masterminds behind the script and Oscar-winner Lasseter in the director’s chair, it could be something really special…and Lasseter’s passion for the characters is evident.
“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew [Stanton], Pete [Docter], Lee [Unkrich] and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie — and I wanted to direct it myself.”
Rumblings of TS4 began back in December when Morris was interviewed by Disney Latino, with him telling the Spanish-language blog that they were on their third table-read. EXCITING! But before you get TOO excited, Toy Story 4 isn’t slated to hit theaters till June 16, 2017.
Until then, let the speculation run wild! I wonder who the lucky couple will be? Can’t be The Potatoheads (I always think of it as their last name instead of “Potato Head,” haaaa), they’re already married!
