Can you believe it’s already been three months since the announcement of Indiana Jones 5? In the midst of summer blockbuster season, it’s easy to forget about things like that – and granted, we haven’t heard a whole lot of news about the film since the initial confirmation. But another big piece of the puzzle has just fallen into place, so it’s time for an update.
We already know that Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford will return for the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, and now another key player is set to come back: legendary composer John Williams. The news came directly from Spielberg himself, who spoke with Entertainment Tonight‘s Ashley Crossan while attending the American Film Tribute show last night:
This is great news for fans of the franchise, as Williams’ music is one of the major components that helped make the original films so iconic. And it comes at the perfect time, with Williams being honored with the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award, which was presented by Spielberg himself.
Spielberg and Williams have been working together for decades, beginning all the way back in 1975 with Jaws, and Williams is already set to score Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One, along with the upcoming family film The BFG. And it probably doesn’t hurt that of the five Oscars that Williams has won throughout his career, three of them were for Spielberg films.
Not that Williams hasn’t done amazing work without Spielberg, of course: he also provided the iconic themes from Star Wars, as well as contributing to the Harry Potter franchise. It’s no wonder the guy has been nominated for 50 Academy Awards, with a body of work that has remained consistently incredible over the years.
And speaking of Star Wars, the 84-year-old composer himself confirmed his plans to return for Episode VIII, telling Variety:
“If I can do it, I certainly will. I told Kathy Kennedy I’m happy to do it, but the real reason is, I didn’t want anybody else writing music for Daisy Ridley.”
Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters on December 15, 2017, while Indiana Jones 5 is currently slated for release on July 19, 2019.
