Johnny Depp Injured on Set of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’

By March 11, 2015

Right now in Australia, the fifth installment of the popular Pirates of the Caribbean film series, entitled Dead Men Tell No Tales, is shooting with Johnny Depp back onboard for his Oscar nominated role of Captain Jack Sparrow. Unfortunately, the actor has been hurt on the set, and has to return to the United States to undergo surgery.

According to a report from Variety, the 51-year old actor was injured while not working, but the exact nature of his injury, or how he got it, was not disclosed. It is severe enough, though, that he’ll need to be returned to the United States, and will miss at least the next few weeks of shooting in order to have ample recovery time. The production will only be impacted slightly by Depp’s absence, as they will be shooting around the scenes requiring the presence of Captain Jack. The film just began shooting next month, and is still on track to meet its theatrical release date of July 7th, 2017.

The official plot synopsis for the new film, as revealed by THR last month, is as follows:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea, including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

In addition to Depp and Bardem, other cast members include Geoffrey Rush returning as Captain Barbossa,  and Kevin McNally returning as Gibbs. Rumors continue to persist about Orlando Bloom’s possible return to the franchise as Will Turner, but nothing is as-yet confirmed.
