Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd Reportedly Up For Lead Role in ‘Ant-Man’

By October 14, 2013

Marvel recently moved Edgar Wright’s take on Ant-Man up to July 31st, 2015, indicating a strong level of confidence on their part considering how insanely competitive that summer is going to be. We haven’t seen a trailer (or really anything since that test footage that debuted at Comic-Con 2012), but now we have some interesting info to parse: Variety is reporting that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd are in contention for the lead role.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

JGL makes total sense, considering he’s already been heroic (not quite superheroic) for Marvel’s rival, DC, in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. He’s one of the best actors of his generation and really has it all: charisma, looks, physicality, a seriousness when necessary, and a great sense of humor. Plus, Marvel has had the young star in their sights for quite some time – they wanted him to play the lead in Guardians of the Galaxy (the actor chose to star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For instead), and they were rumored to have him in mind for their upcoming Doctor Strange film, as well.

Paul Rudd

Paul Rudd is a more interesting choice simply because his name hasn’t been among those that have popped up when it comes to Marvel projects. Rudd’s obviously a very talented guy, and if the studio ended up choosing him to lead Ant-Man, it’d along the same lines of choosing “Parks and Recreation” star Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in Guardians: they’d be taking a guy you wouldn’t instantly think of as an action hero and putting him into Marvel’s deeply connected universe of films.

I’m a big fan of both of these actors, so I’m having fun imagining either of them hanging out with The Avengers or chillin’ with the Guardians. Who would you rather see suit up and shrink down as the title hero here?
