Joseph Gordon-Levitt Could Take to the Skies For Robert Zemeckis in ‘To Reach The Clouds’

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has always seemed like a pretty grounded guy, but if this latest report turns out to be true, he may soon have his head – and the rest of his body – in the clouds for Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis.

Twitch is reporting that JGL has joined Zemeckis’ adaptation of Philippe Petit’s memoir “To Reach The Clouds,” which tells the unbelievable true story of how Petit walked on a tightrope between the Twin Towers back in 1974. It was a stunning, amazing accomplishment which took six years of planning and the dedicated involvement of a close group of friends to pull it off, and the story has already been told exceptionally well on film in James Marsh’s 2008 documentary Man on Wire.

Gordon-Levitt will reportedly play the lead role in Zemeckis’ feature version of the event, but it’s unclear whether or not that means he’ll be playing the part of Petit. One can certainly make that assumption, but because this is a new, scripted take on the story, it’s also possible that JGL (who obviously isn’t a Frenchman like Petit) may be playing another person altogether; perhaps the way Zemeckis intends to separate his film from the other versions out there is that we see the story of Petit’s incredible journey through the eyes of a different protagonist this time. The real story unfolds like a heist film with a host of personalities involved helping Petit achieve his goal, so there are a few possibilities if the filmmakers choose to tell the story from a different angle.

Even if this turns out to be false, or if negotiations fall apart entirely, I thought it was worth writing about because it gives me an opportunity to try to convince you to check out Man on Wire if you haven’t seen it before. It’s streaming on Netflix now, and if you’re not a Netflix person, I’m sure it’s readily available through whatever service you prefer. Trust me – if you’ve never heard this story before, it’s definitely worth a watch. Check out the trailer below:

I’m really liking the concept of this movie even though I haven’t heard much about it until now. I guess that’s why I keep coming back here for all of my news and information. You guys seem to have it first.
