You know how sometimes movies make a ton of money, so the studios say “Hey, we should make more of these!”, and then they do just that? Well, after Jurassic World made $1.6 billion worldwide this past summer, it was the least shocking news ever when it was announced that a sequel was in the works. I mean…duh. And while today’s news may not exactly blow your dino-socks off, it’s still worth passing along. According to a report from SlashFilm, there will be a third installment of the Jurassic World franchise, making it a bonafide trilogy. I mean…DUH.
Apparently Jurassic World writer/director Colin Trevorrow has had a trilogy in mind from the get-go, although he seemingly forgot to mention it to the higher-ups at Universal. While he won’t be directing the sequel due to obligations on a little side project called Star Wars: Episode IX, he will still be handling screenwriting duties. And, according to Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley, he’s got some help:
Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He’s been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It’s a happy surprise.
Yes, I’d say Trevorrow working with Steven Spielberg on a Jurassic World trilogy is a very “happy surprise” for, like, everybody. Literally everybody.
Trevorrow has already hinted at the possible future of the franchise (see?), moving the action away from the “dinosaurs chasing people on an island” format. After all, it’s called Jurassic World. Things should probably branch out into the rest of the, you know, WORLD at some point. The fact that Trevorrow’s had the idea for a trilogy in his mind from the start should also inspire some optimism with fans that this won’t just be a case of Universal churning out more films just to make more money. I mean, that’s totally what they’re doing on some level, but hopefully it will actually have some substance to it as opposed to, say, the Transformers sequels and whatnot. I’m saying there’s a chance, people.
No word yet on who will be directing the second and/or third film in the Jurassic World trilogy, but with both Trevorrow and Spielberg onboard to help guide things along, it appears the future is bright for fans of dinosaur-related mayhem everywhere.
The Jurassic World sequel is set to hit theaters on June 22nd, 2018.
