After months of silence and being presumably left on the cutting room floor, it looks like Justice League Dark (or Dark Universe) may finally be finding some new life once again. After receiving a full script from director and writer Guillermo del Toro, the project (which would create a team from some of DC Comics most obscure and mystifying characters), is apparently looking to begin production sometime next year after producer Scott Rudin stepped in to help speed up the process.
Just yesterday in fact, several names of actors were released that the studio was apparently looking to sign for the film as well, including Ron Perlman, Colin Farrell, and more. No director has stepped up at the helm yet either though, so it looks like things may still remain in the unknown for the time being.
However, according to a new report by Heroic Hollywood, it looks like the studio has already found their top choice to play the film’s main villain, Anton Arcane. The report states that Bloodline and Star Wars: Rogue One actor Ben Mendelsohn is reportedly in talks to take on the role in the movie, but will not fully consider taking the job until a director signs on, which the studio is reportedly searching to find.
For those of you who don’t know too, Arcane was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson and is considered Swamp Thing’s arch nemesis. The character is a mad scientist obsessed with gaining immortality, which has led to his creation of horrifying creatures called”Un-Men” in addition to his other hideous experiments on the already dead. Louis Jourdan originally played Arcane in Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing, and even went on to reprise his role in the 1989 sequel, The Return of Swamp Thing.
After a long and successful career making films in Australia too, Mendelsohn has recently been a breakout star in the states as well through his roles in films like The Place Beyond the Pines, Killing Them Softly, The Dark Knight Rises, as well as his recent Emmy-nominated performance in Netflix’s original series, Bloodline. He’s currently tied up filming Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars: Rogue One, but with production set to begin sometime next year for Justice League Dark, it is possible that he could agree to play Arcane as well, depending on who ends up signing on as the film’s director. Either way, it looks like there may still be hope for Justice League Dark after all.
Justice League Dark does not currently have a release date.
