Out of all of the projects that DC and Warner Bros. currently have slated or in development, one of the most interesting is Justice League Dark (or Dark Universe). After receiving a full script from filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, not much noise has been made about the project since. While del Toro has expressed his passion and hopes of getting the film made, the question of whether or not the studio will actually incorporate it into their DC Cinematic Universe plans has yet to be answered.
The film is based on the comic book of the same name, and creates a team of some of DC’s most obscure and mystical characters, with the film version reportedly including John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Madame Xanadu, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon. Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress has also been rumored for the project as well, but that would all depend on if the film happens, or is included in DC’s main cinematic universe. Whether or not the movie will actually get made is still a mystery though, even after gaining producer Scott Rudin a few months ago, who wanted to get the film ready to shoot sometime in 2016.
However, according to a new report from Latino-Review, it looks like the studio may already have some actors in mind for the movie’s lead team. The report states that del Toro wanted Ron Perlman to play Swamp Thing in the film, which the studio also wants, and are also looking at Ewan McGregor or Colin Farrell for the role of John Constantine. Apparently, whichever of the two actors doesn’t get Constantine could also play Jason Blood in the film as well, who is the human side of Etrigan.
WB is apparently hoping for a comedic actor to play Deadman, and are currently looking for a Hispanic or black actress to play Zatanna. Monica Bellucci is apparently the top choice as well for Madame Xandu, following her recent part in Spectre.
Now, this is still just a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt for the moment. However, each of the names do make sense for the roles they’re mentioned for, and it seems like Justice League Dark has a real possibility of actually happening at this point if this rumor holds any actual weight to it. As someone who personally loves this specific side of the DC universe too, I’m hoping that we get some more concrete news stories coming in the next few months.
Justice League Dark is currently in development.
