After cementing themselves as two of the funniest voices in comedy right now, Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele are coming together to bring us their first feature film, and we cannot wait. The film, titled Keanu, follows the lead duo as a pair of suburban cousins that must go looking through the underground, gangster world for their stolen cat, Keanu. For those of you wondering too, it is the cutest cat ever, so the search makes sense.
Featuring some of the duo’s comedy friends as well, including The Last Man on Earth‘s Will Forte, Rob Huebel, and more, Keanu is probably our most anticipated comedy film of this year, based purely on the ridiculous premise, and the starpower of Key & Peele.
Today, the first red band trailer for the film has premiered online, and it’s just as silly and fun as you might think:
Here’s the film’s full synopsis:
“Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, a.k.a. the hugely popular comedy duo Key & Peele, star as Clarence and Rell, two cousins who live in the city but are far from streetwise. When Rell’s beloved kitten, Keanu, is catnapped, the hopelessly straight-laced pair must impersonate ruthless killers in order to infiltrate a street gang and retrieve the purloined feline. But the incredibly adorable kitten becomes so coveted that the fight over his custody creates a gang war, forcing our two unwitting heroes to take the law into their own hands.”
Playing on some old school movie tropes, including racial stereotypes, overused plot elements, and some overstated action sequences, and Keanu looks kind of exactly like we imagined it, and that’s not even close to being a bad thing. The action shots of the cat running around in between legs and puddles of blood too, seem to tease some even more ingenious tricks from the comedy duo than the trailer’s even willing to show.
Directed by their long-time collaborator, Peter Antencio, Keanu looks like the kind of stylized, ridiculous comedy film that only these two guys could give us, making it one of the hopefully can’t-miss comedies this year. Did I mention it’s got Will Forte in yet another ridiculous hairdo too?
Keanu is set to hit theatres on April 22nd.
