In case the cast members from The Force Awakens weren’t already star-studded enough, the cast additions for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII are fairly spectacular all the way across the board. However, among heavy hitters like Benicio del Toro and Laura Dern, possibly the most intriguing addition was Kelly Marie Tran, an actress known mostly for her work in College Humor videos online and through her comedy.
Obviously, little is known about any of the new characters, but John Boyega did say a few months ago that Tran had emerged as one of Episode VIII‘s new leads, leaving many fans to wonder if Rian Johnson had brought in yet another unknown actress to the franchise, with an even larger role than some might think beforehand, similar to Daisy Ridley in Episode VII.
A new report has surfaced online today as well though, that could possibly reveal not only Tran’s role in the film, but also how she ties into Boyega’s Finn, and before I go too far into it, I’m gonna go right ahead and issue a POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING here. Read on only if you’re okay with some possible Episode VIII spoilers being revealed to you.
Citing a source apparently close to the film, International Business Times has posted a breakdown of what is apparently Tran’s introductory scene in the film, and reveals her character to be an information broker, who sells top secret intelligence to the highest bidder. According to the report, the scene in question features Tran’s Aya (though even the report says that could just be a code name for her character for right now) and Boyega’s Finn having a conversation at a bar apparently fancier than any of the watering holes seen previously in the franchise.
The report goes on to state that the scene ends with stormtroopers ambushing the bar and firing at Finn, before Aya helps Finn to escape by leading him out the back door.
Remember to take all of this with a grain of salt for the time being as a majority of these Star Wars rumors have a habit of proving to be untrue (again, only for the most part). With that being said, given what we know about some of the locations and scene set-ups Boyega was involved with, this does seem to fit in line with some of what we already know about one possible chase scene involving him in Dubrovnik.
If Boyega’s previous comments about Tran’s role end up being true as well, then I imagine that she’ll stay close to Finn and the Resistance throughout the rest of the film after the stormtrooper attack, similar to how he and Rey were partnered up in The Force Awakens. Principal photography on Episode VIII just finished filming last month, and with Rogue One only a few more months away now, hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer for some actual news from the production. A title announcement alone would be nice at this point.
Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to hit theatres on December 15th, 2017.
