Kelsey Grammer – the man who spent more than twenty years playing Dr. Frasier Crane on “Cheers,” “Frasier,” and a brief appearance on “Wings” – is heading back to the big screen.
Grammer is familiar with big-budget blockbusters, playing Hank “Beast” McCoy in Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand, but it’s been a while since he appeared on a multiplex screen in a large role. The actor has been busy playing a demented mayor in the Starz series “Boss” and he’s popped up in a few small films over the past few years, but now Deadline reports that he’s scored the lead human villain role in Michael Bay’s upcoming Transformers 4.
The movie – which, let’s be honest here, really should have been called Trans4mers – stars Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and rookie actors Jack Reynor and Nicola Peltz as the two young love interests replacing Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. (Trivia: The Rock was initially approached to play Wahlberg’s role, but due to scheduling conflicts, he had to give up the role to his Pain & Gain co-star.) Accurate plot details are hard to come by at the moment, but we know that the screenplay comes from Dark of the Moon writer Ehren Kruger and that this should be Bay’s last attempt at the franchise from the director’s chair, so…we’re not really sure how this one will play out yet.
Grammer will be playing an evil counter intelligence agent named Harold Attinger. Bay has cast terrific actors in this series before to mixed results (John Malkovich and Frances McDormand are awesome, but they were both terrible in Dark of the Moon), so we’ll see which on side of the fence Grammer falls. What do you think about the former Frasier facing off against the human protagonists in a new Transformers movie? Sound off below.
Transformers 4 is scheduled to “roll out” (get it, Autobot fans?) on June 27th, 2014.
