(Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who still haven’t seen Kingsman: The Secret Service…)
Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service was one of the breakout hits of the year a few months ago, as the violent and edgy film not only managed to be a successful parody of some of the older, cheesy spy films of the past, but also be a modern and outrageous action film. It might just be one of, if not, the most successful adaptation of any of Mark Millar’s work up until this point as well.
One of the most surprising parts of the film too was just how convincing Colin Firth ended up being as the older, badass spy mentor to Taron Egerton’s Eggsy. However, the movie also featured his apparent death at the hands of Samuel L. Jackson’s Valentine about halfway through, as the villain practically shot the character at point blank range right in front of our very eyes.
There have been rumors though over the past few months since the film’s release that Firth’s Galahad might return in the film’s sequel, and while nothing has been confirmed yet, fans have already begun speculating about how his character could come back from the dead (basically). While speaking with IGN recently too, Mark Millar revealed that the creative team have been discussing Firth’s possible return in the sequel, and if or how he could come back. Read his full quote below:
“That’s the conversation everyone’s having right now, because part of what made that movie work is Colin. Colin’s fantastic, it was a two-hander, that film. You also want to have the integrity of the story, so if you are bringing him back, it has to make sense. That’s where it is at at the moment. Beats of the story have been done. [Screenplay co-writers] Matthew [Vaughn] and Jane [Goldman] are working on it at the moment. Some things have to be worked out, some decisions have still to be made and everything, so it’s all fairly amorphous, but all going well.”
Millar brings up a great point about the film being a two-hander in a sense, with Firth and Egerton bouncing off of each other so perfectly, that it’s easy to see why the young actor has become a near superstar following his debut in the film. So while it would be nice to see Firth return in his role, it should also be noted that the film would also be in more-than-safe hands with Egerton as the sole lead, and some of the supporting character possibly returning as well.
Matthew Vaughn has spoken before about how much he would like to see Firth return as well in the past, but it seems like the creative team are seriously discussing whether or not it would benefit the sequel’s story before they make a decision, which should give fans some comfort regarding the sequel. Whether or not Firth returns though, the first film set up the world and characters so well, that it doesn’t seem like a make or break thing at this point, and as long as Matthew Vaughn returns, I’ll be more than on board for whatever they have in mind moving forward.
Kingsman 2 is currently in development.
