Remember when Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller almost made his own Justice League film years ago, before DC and Warner Bros. suddenly got cold feet and pulled the plug? The film, called Justice League: Mortal, was setting itself up to be one of the most promising superhero films ever.
Now, following his critical and financial success with Mad Max: Fury Road, which he was later nominated for an Oscar for, it looks like DC is desperately trying to bring him back onboard for one of their projects. Can’t really blame them either.
After having being heavily rumored to direct a possible Man of Steel sequel for the studio - which Miller later confirmed to have been in talks for, but downplayed the possibility of it actually happening – the rumor mill is back at it again, and DC may be courting Miller for yet another one of their future, already-announced films.
Heroic Hollywood is reporting that the Fury Road filmmaker is being eyed to direct the studio’s Green Lantern Corps film, which isn’t set to hit theatres until June of 2020, but after the failure that was the 2010 Ryan Reynolds-led Green Lantern, I wouldn’t blame the studio for beginning to work on the new reboot as early as possible, in order to avoid repeating the same mistakes as last time. Especially considering the potential that a well-made Green Lantern Corps film has.
Mad Max: Fury Road has already cemented its place as a masterpiece of blockbuster cinema, and is one of the few action films of recent memory to actually be nominated for any Oscars, outside of just the technical categories. A large majority of that credit needs to be given to Miller as well, who crafted an adrenaline-fueled, constantly moving chase film set in one of the most interesting dystopian worlds in cinema history, that managed to hook moviegoers from the first frame.
I don’t even have to think about it to know that Miller would do a good job with the Green Lantern Corps film either… However, I also know that Miller has expressed his interest in doing a smaller film next following the behemoth that was Fury Road. Not to mention all of the future plans he has to work out for the rest of the Mad Max franchise moving forward. So would a Miller-directed Green Lantern Corps film be incredible to see? Definitely. But at this point, it doesn’t seem all that likely right now, judging by the filmmaker’s more recent comments.
Green Lantern Corps is set to hit theatres on June 19th, 2020.
