Mads Mikkelsen Reveals His ‘Rogue One’ Role

While the first trailer for Rogue One –  A Star Wars Story managed to reveal quite a bit from the mysterious project, it also brought up a lot of intriguing questions and possibilities without any answers at the same time, including the identities of a number of the characters other than Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso.

One of the few faces missing from the trailer as well, was Mads Mikkelsen, who was confirmed to be starring in the film at last year’s D23 Expo, but has remained tight-lipped about who’s playing in the film, or how major of a role he’ll even be having.

In an interview with Sky News (which has since been removed) however, Mikkelsen revealed that he’ll be playing (Minor SPOILER WARNING) none other than Jyn Erso’s father in the film, so for all of you out there hoping he’d be that mysterious cloaked figure in the trailer, you might be a bit disappointed. Here’s what he had to say about the film:

“I read the script and it was very beautiful. Felicity [Jones] is playing this lovely, strong woman. I play her… father. That’s too much, I’m sorry.”

So clearly a minor slip-up on his part, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like that big of a spoiler to me. Okay, so he’s playing Jyn’s father in the film, but it’s not like he said how important the character is in the story, or even how much of the film he’s in. I don’t think anyone had previously speculated this as his role though, and it’ll be interesting to see how much Rogue One delves into Jyn Erso’s lineage or ancestry, and if she has any connections to larger characters in the Star Wars universe.

The actor also confirmed in the interview that he is playing a villain in Doctor Strange later this year as well, which isn’t really news considering we already knew that from the casting reports and speculation already surrounding his character’s identity in that film.

I do hope that Mikkelsen gets a fair amount to do in Rogue One though, cause otherwise it might just feel like a bit of a wasted opportunity, coming off of the critical acclaim of Hannibal to not capitalize on the good will and hype surrounding Mikkelsen in the industry right now. Though at the same time, I suppose Mikkelsen is able to elevate practically any movie he’s in, whether it be in a minor or major role.

Rogue One – A Star Wars Story is set to hit theatres on December 16th.

Yeah, I was worried when he didn’t even appear in the first trailer, but I’m hoping that was done on purpose to mislead.
