After Magic Mike co-star Joe Manganiello mentioned that a sequel to the 2012 film was happening (“I think they’re going to announce it soon”), some interesting – and hilarious – news has come to light today.

First of all: not only is the sequel happening, but it’s going to be called Magic Mike XXL. I know, right? I love it.

The other big news is that The Playlist reports Steven Soderbergh has handed the director’s chair over to Greg Jacobs (above right), Soderbergh’s “right hand man,” since his first AD gig on 1993’s King Of The Hill. Jacobs was a producer on a huge chunk of Soderbergh’s films, is an executive producer on his upcoming Showtime series “The Knick,” and the fact that served as producer/first AD on the original Magic Mike bodes well for XXL. Soderbergh will stay on hand as executive producer of the sequel, which makes me breathe a sigh of relief.

Jacobs has some directing experience under his belt with 2004’s Criminal, a small film that starred John C. Reilly and Maggie Gyllenhaal (a remake of Nine Queens) and 2007’s Wind Chill, a thriller starring Emily Blunt.

Channing Tatum and the rest of the cast are expected to come back, but you never know with a sequel – characters can be written out to make room for new ones. The killer in Friday The 13th was originally Jason’s Mom (SPOILER ALERT – oops), after all. There had been some talk of Tatum and producer Reid Carolin directing this project themselves, but it looks like they’ll find another project to mark as their directorial debut. And what about Matthew McConaughey’s Dallas character? Will he return to wearing thongs so soon after his Oscar win? Time will tell.

So, what do you think about this news? Do you want to see a sequel to Magic Mike?
