In case you don’t obsessively follow movie news, you might not know this, but 2015 is going to be an absolutely insane year when it comes to movies. Fifty Shades of Grey, Focus, Cinderella, Insidious Chapter 3, Fast & Furious 7, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Mad Max: Fury Road, Pitch Perfect 2, Tomorrowland, Jurassic World, Fantastic Four, Inside Out, Ted 2, Terminator: Genesis, Ant-Man, Pan, Assassin’s Creed, Frankenstein, Crimson Peak, Bond 24, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Mission Impossible 5, and – oh yeah – a little film called Star Wars: Episode VII are all coming out that year, and those are only the big releases. Now we can throw one more sequel into the mix: Magic Mike XXL.

Warner Bros. has set the film to debut on July 3rd, 2015, setting up a face off between male strippers and time traveling robots since Paramount’s Terminator: Genesis opens on July 1st. And for those of you who thought the first film was a bit too bleak, star Channing Tatum told MTV that they’re changing the tone dramatically for the sequel:

This one will be a road trip movie. Without giving a lot away, we don’t want to make it a really serious, sort of ‘slice of life’ movie. We want to have reality in it, but we don’t want to make it some dark drama. There was some darkness in the last one, and I think that surprised people and shocked people. This one, we want there to be a lot of conflict and struggle, but we also want there to be a shit-ton of fun. A shit-ton of just ridiculous stuff you would never see in a movie on the face of the Earth ever again, that’s kind of what we want to do with this one.

And as for whether or not recent Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey will be back, Tatum was optimistic. “I think everyone’s going to be back, I think. Obviously no one’s deals are done, which are always kind of scary.” All right, all right, all right – sounds good to us. I was one of those people who thought the first Magic Mike was a little darker than I anticipated, so a bit more lighthearted road trip movie with this cast sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Gambit

But what might be even more fun is to see Channing Tatum play Gambit in an X-Men film. He’s gone public with his love of the character before, but instead of just professing his interest in the role, Tatum now says he’s gone as far as to meet with X-Men film producer Lauren Schuler Donner about playing the part one day.

I met with Lauren Schuler Donner. I would love—Gambit’s my really only X-Men that I’ve ever loved. I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, [but] I don’t know I guess just being from down south — my dad’s from Louisiana and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida — I don’t know I just related to him. He’s just kind of a suave; he’s the most un-X-Men X-Man who’s ever been in X-Men, other than maybe Wolverine. He’s kind of like the anti-hero; he’s a thief. He’s not even like a hero, he’s kind of walking the line of grey. He loves women and drinking and smoking, he’s just a cool guy that happens to have a good moral center…I hope it does [happen]. You never know, it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would play it. I’m already working on the accent.
