A few weeks ago, screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg offered an exciting update on New Mutants, Fox’s new standalone film following the titular group of X-Men characters, which had for the most part gone under the radar following its initial announcement. Quickly after that, a rumor started circling the web that seemed to indicate three actresses possibly up for roles in the film as well, which is set to be directed by The Fault in Our Stars‘ Josh Boone.
One of the three was none other than Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, who was rumored to be in talks to play the role of Wolfsbane in the film, a Scottish werewolf/shape-shifter from the comics, though the report was apparently debunked not shortly after by Fox.
Whether it was real or not though, it sounds like Williams may or may not at least have had conversations about the project with Fox, as she was strangely cagey about the rumors while speaking recently with EW:
“I can’t say much about it at all, but I would absolutely love to be a part of it, to be a part of the Marvel family. New Mutants looks absolutely incredible and I’ve always loved the idea of spin-offs and [director] Joshua Boone is incredibly talented. So, yeah, sign me up.”
Her Game of Thrones co-star, Sophie Turner, is set to make her onscreen debut as Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse next month, so it’s possible that she’s already very familiar with the creative team behind the scenes on the films. After emerging as one of the top young actresses to watch out for because of her work as Arya Stark in Thrones as well though, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the studios snatches her up for a superhero franchise of some kind, sometime in the near future.
Whether that ends up being New Mutants or not will remain unknown for the time being it looks like, but at the very least, Williams’ comments seem to indicate that she’s aware of the project and the possibility at this point. I suspect, after all of the recent updates from the past few weeks as well, that we won’t have to wait much longer for some kind of casting news regarding the film either.
The New Mutants film does not currently have a release date.
