When Mad Max: Fury Road was released earlier this year, to say that it blew away audiences, would be an understatement. The film and its action became one of the biggest talking points of this year’s rather vacant summer movie season, and George Miller has already been mentioned multiple times about possibly being a contender for Best Director at next year’s Oscars. Whether or not something like that actually comes to fruition though, is more unlikely than we all probably would like.
However, another thing that the film made a lot of people think about is George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal film that he almost made years ago for DC and Warner Bros. The film had assembled a pretty stellar cast, and was originally supposed to be the film that would launch the DC Cinematic Universe at the time. No one really knows what went wrong with the project, only that it didn’t end up happening, and now that Mad Max has once again proven how talented of a director, George Miller is, it’s hard not to want to see what his version of the Justice League would have looked like.
While we already know Zack Synder will be directing both Justice League Part One and Part Two, it looks like George Miller might finally be getting his chance to direct a DC film after all. Possibly, at least. While appearing on DC Movie News on Popcorn Talk, The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? Jon Schnepp, seemed to confirm that Miller will be directing the rumored sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel. Check out his full quote below:
“George Miller is doing Man of Steel 2. I don’t feel weird about breaking it. Obviously Zack Snyder is doing Justice League one and two, James Wan is doing Aquaman. … I think George Miller’s a perfect choice to do Man of Steel 2. He’s going to bring so much to it.”
Now, it’s entirely possible that this isn’t happening at all, and should mostly be classified as a rumor at this point. After all, there hasn’t been much news regarding the long-awaited sequel to Man of Steel, and we don’t even know for sure if DC is working in development on the project at this point. The last we heard was that WB and DC were more focused on establishing the rest of the DC Cinematic Universe, before going back and focusing more on Superman (Henry Cavill).
With that being said, if this does end up being true, I don’t think many people would protest this choice. Most of the complaints that came with Man of Steel revolved around how the film deteriorated into an all-out action fest by the end, until it became mind-numbing at points. Meanwhile, George Miller just went and made a 2-hour movie that was almost entirely action, and none of it became generic or melded together at any point. The action was riveting and serviced the story in interesting ways throughout the entire film. So George Miller doing Man of Steel 2? Yes, please.
The Man of Steel sequel is in development right now.
