Marvel is NOT Planning a ‘Punisher’ Spin-Off Series After All

About a month or so ago, a report came out saying that Marvel was on the verge of green lighting a Punisher spin-off series on Netflix, based off of Jon Bernthal’s iteration in the newest season of Daredevil, and after seeing the first actual story footage of him in the show’s trailer last week, it wasn’t that hard to believe.

While recently speaking with Digital Spy though, Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, revealed that the studio hasn’t started development on a spin-off for the character… yet, at least.

Loeb commented on the rumors and speculation from the past month with the following:

“I think that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening. It’s certainly our hope that any of our characters will be embraced and that people want to see more of them.”

The TV exec went on to further illustrate his point by sharing his surprise that Jessica Jones was even renewed for a second season following its massive critical success last year:

“When they announced that Jessica Jones was getting a second season, every single report said, ‘It should come as a surprise to no one that Jessica Jones has received a second season order.’ I’m the guy going, ‘Well, it was a surprise to me!’ It isn’t a given in television. The fact that we get to continue telling stories with these characters speaks a lot about the quality of the storytelling and the acting and the writing. We are telling the best stories that we can at Netflix, and they seem to be responding to it.”

The studio may very well be holding off on any spin-off plans for the character until they hear and see the fans and general public’s reaction to Bernthal’s version late next month. This isn’t the first time that some seemingly incorrect rumors have gained traction in the Marvel TV world though, after the studio recently also squashed rumors that they might be trashing their Iron Fist TV series.

We’ll have to wait and see what the plans are for the Marvel Netflix world moving forwards, with Luke Cage also set to make its premiere this year, Iron Fist still in the works, and a second season of Jessica Jones possibly happening this year as well. For right now though, you can still go and watch that Punisher trailer over and over again, I know I have.

Season 2 of Daredevil will premiere on Netflix on March 18th.
