Rumor: Marvel Studios Sets ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ for May 2016 Release

By February 6, 2014

Big news today regarding Marvel’s Phase 3 slate of films. While fans have been speculating about whether or not Doctor Strange or Black Panther would be joining Ant-Man as a Phase 3 release, it looks like Marvel may be putting its focus on sequels instead. Although it’s still technically just a rumor, according to JoBloGuardians of the Galaxy 2 is set to join sequels Thor 3 and Captain America 3 as one of Marvel’s Phase 3 releases.

Considering that the first Guardians of the Galaxy hasn’t even come out yet, it’s definitely a positive sign that Marvel is already committing to a sequel, especially for a film that doesn’t have the built-in crossover appeal of some of Marvel’s more well-known franchises. The footage released at Comic-Con last summer was well-received and it’s hard not to speculate that Marvel must be extremely pleased with what director James Gunn has done with the project.

Guardians of the Galaxy first look

Making things even more interesting is that Marvel has apparently slated Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for May 6, 2016, the same date Warner Bros. rescheduled the highly-anticipated Batman vs. Superman. If this is true, releasing a Guardians sequel instead of Captain America 3 or Thor 3 on this date is a pretty gutsy move on Marvel’s part.

Making this rumor seem even more likely is the fact that an animated series based on the film is set to debut on Disney XD in 2015. No word yet about any of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast – which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Bradley Cooper – committing to the sequel, but it would be hard to imagine they wouldn’t be on board considering Marvel is usually pretty good about locking actors down in multi-picture deals.

  • Sweet. I’m excited to see if the first Guardians movie is as insane as I hope it’s going to be, and whether Marvel will bring James Gunn back for the sequel
