Marvel’s Thor Is Going To Be A Woman!

Well, this is interesting news! Today it was announced on…wait for it…”The View,” that Marvel’s Thor is no longer worthy of his mighty hammer and that a woman is now going to wield it!

Wait, what? First of all, “The View”? I mean, I get that it’s ABC and there’s the whole Disney thing. I know it’s all women over there, but come on! Just stop it! Save it for Comic-Con. It’s not like this isn’t going to get press!

Ahem. Moving on. Marvel announced the news on its site and posted some new art. They said,”Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series, THOR, written by Jason Aaron complimented with art from Russell Dauterman.” The issues will hit shelves this October.

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” said Marvel editor Wil Moss in the announcement. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Thor

Series writer Jason Aaron explained, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

There are plenty of female characters in Asgard, so there are any number of candidates. Who do you think it should be? It’s interesting to note that this will be Marvel’s 8th title to feature a female lead. Well, now that I’ve dumped this on you, I know you’re going to have opinions. Mine is that though I have no issue at all with where they’re taking the story, (and I’m definitely going to read it) I’d rather see a new woman, because, despite what Aaron says, most people are always going to qualify her as “Lady” Thor. Let’s hear what you think about this below.

  • And what will happen to Natalie Portman? Will she go lez?! 😛

  • Interesting! I wonder if any other Marvel characters will experience similar things soon…
