A new Masters of the Universe movie has been in the works at Hollywood for years now, with many false starts and updates along the road that seemed to promise it would actually be happening, until everything went silent and we all eventually shrugged our shoulders and forgot about it. Thanks to the IP-heavy era of the industry we live in right now though, it was inevitable that a reboot would enter into the conversation again, and now, it seems closer to happening than it ever has before.

With The Legend of Hercules‘ Kellan Lutz rumored to be playing He-Man in the film, its director McG has come out with some new comments about the movie, teasing what fans could expect it to be whenever it actually hits theatres.

Speaking with IGN, the director said that the new reboot will be like a mix between Guardians of the Galaxy and Game of Thrones, which if we’re being completely honest, sounds about right:

We also need to be cognizant of the incredible resonance of what Kevin Feige is doing with Marvel, and the balance of full-bodied entertainment. That it’s both credible and emotional, action-packed, and the story of a hero’s journey. It’s the genesis of He-Man, it’s the becoming of He-Man. We want it to be clicking on all cylinders in that regard…. Obviously, we’re all cognizant of what’s going on with Game of Thrones. It’s incredible. We’re cognizant of what’s going on in Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn’s doing a great job. We’re going to try to answer the call and take it higher.

Considering the mixture of genres that’s been present in Masters of the Universe from the beginning, and the current state of modernization and grittiness that’s taking over a number of the popular franchises right now, this doesn’t come as that much of a surprise. In fact, it sounds like the perfect mixture for the new reboot to try and be.

I just wish there was a more capable filmmaker behind the helm here, than McG, someone who gave me the confidence that this could actually be like that. For right now though, I think it’d be safe to say that nothing from the project has given me the reason to think that, yet.

Masters of the Universe does not yet have a release date.
