Matt Damon Reveals the One Superhero Role He Turned Down

It seems like the superhero genre is able to bring in any actor, director, or writer at this point, and when an actor like Al Pacino says he’s ready to make a film with Marvel – you know the genre has become present on literally everyones’ minds. Any movie star, theatre actor, or unknown up and comer – you never know for sure who might get cast in what iconic role from now on, and it’s been a huge factor in elevating the genre above some of the preconceived notions critics had a decade or so ago.

However, one of the few movie stars who has surprisingly never partaken in the genre is Matt Damon. It’s somewhat surprising considering how big a profile the actor has had since the 90s even, and even more shocking when you remember that his best friend, Ben Affleck, has played two well-known superheroes at this point.

Well, it looks like he almost did actually. While speaking recently with NY Daily News, Damon revealed that he had originally considered playing Matt Murdock in the 2003 Daredevil film because of his shared childhood love of the comics and character with Affleck. He eventually turned down the role though since he hadn’t seen any of director Mark Steven Johnson’s work and “chickened out” because he didn’t know if the role was right for him onscreen. As we all know now though, the role ended up actually going to Affleck with… disappointing results. To say the least.

“For us it was always ‘Daredevil’ — that’s the comic we read when we were kids. But when that one came along (in 2003) I chickened out, because I couldn’t tell. I hadn’t seen the director (Mark Steven Johnson’s) work and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘No.’ Ben was like, ‘I gotta do it.’ And the movie ended up doing very well, even though I don’t think Ben was ultimately very proud of it.”

While Damon said the chances of him ever putting on a cape and cowl at this point are very slim, he did reveal a scenario in which he would considering putting a costume on:

“If Chris Nolan came up to me and said, ‘I want to do Daredevil,’ I would be in.”

Well, while we all know that the likelihood of Christopher Nolan making a Daredevil movie are basically zero, especially considering the highly-successful Netflix series that debuted earlier this year (where actor Charlie Cox plays the blind vigilante). However, I wouldn’t have minded seeing Damon as Murdock at one point, and while he’s definitely nearing an age where he couldn’t do it a few years down the line, the idea that at one point that casting was a possibility, is pretty exciting. Even if the movie itself didn’t turn out very well.

Even though we won’t be seeing Damon in a red or black costume anytime soon, he will be reprising his role as the iconic Jason Bourne in Bourne 5, and can be seen in Ridley Scott’s The Martian in a few weeks. The latter of which has been receiving large amounts of Oscar buzz the past few weeks.
