Jeff Nichols has proven himself to be one of the best up-and-coming filmmakers in Hollywood right now after both Take Shelter and Mud. He’s shown that he can tell big stories in often small ways, and the way he’s able to weave his varying themes and messages into the film’s tapestry of action and plot has set him apart from nearly every other director his age. However, it’s been a few years since his last film, and I don’t think I’m alone in waiting anxiously to see something from his next project.
The director has been hard at work over the past few years on a new sci-fi movie called Midnight Special, that while featuring an intriguing premise, has also managed to grab a strong ensemble of actors including Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Jaeden Lieberher, Adam Driver, and more.
If this first image (via EW) and poster are any indication of the film’s quality too, it looks like we’re in for one interesting, and exciting ride from Nichols again this time around. Check them out below:
While a lot of secrecy is still surrounding the film’s story, we do know that the film involves a husband and wife (Shannon and Dunst), who’s son (Lieberher) is supernaturally gifted, but when his powers are revealed to the world, the family is forced to run from both religious extremists and law enforcement. The filmmaker also described the film’s influences to EW as well, and you can find his full quote below:
“Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Starman, they were my inspirations — very propulsive journeys that work when you can’t predict what’s going to happen next.”
As a long-time fan of Nichols and his work, I cannot wait for this movie. Every single one of his past projects have taken place in such interesting sub-worlds and are so rich in atmosphere, that the idea of him taking on a John Carpenter/Steven Spielberg-esque sci-fi movie almost sounds too good to be true. Taking the incredible cast into account as well, and Midnight Special has quickly become one of my most anticipated films of next year. If I had any doubts before, the added detail of including the Superman comic book on the poster makes me as sure as I can be that we’re in store for something really special here.
Midnight Special is set to hit theatres on March 18th, 2016.
