Following a one-two breakout punch with both Take Shelter and Mud, director Jeff Nichols is gearing up to give audiences his most ambitious film yet in Midnight Special. The film is said to be a combination of influences from legendary directors like John Carpenter and Steven Spielberg, combining elements of classic sci-fi, family, and road movies into one. Featuring an incredible ensemble cast including Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Sam Shepard, Jaeden Lieberher, Adam Driver, and more too – Midnight Special is already promising to be one of the most interesting films of next year.
Just last week we got our first official poster and image from the film, which follows a husband and wife (Shannon and Dunst), who’s son is gifted with mysterious supernatural powers (Lieberher). When their son’s abilities are exposed to the public though, the family must go on the run from both religious extremists and law enforcement officers. The previous marketing materials vaguely teased the sci-fi/supernatural elements of the movie though, and with the film set to come out in just a few short months, we still hardly know anything about it.
The first official trailer for the film has been released online officially, and it looks exactly like how it was described – only even better. Check it out below:
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
“In the sci-fi thriller Midnight Special, writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon) goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.”
Excuse me while I go and pick my jaw up off the floor.
It’s one thing to compare a movie you’re making to Spielberg classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind or E.T., but it’s another thing to actually deliver on that promise. Going off of this trailer alone too, it looks like Nichols wasn’t just blowing smoke with those remarks, and much like his previous efforts, it looks like Midnight Special will be both a love letter to many of its great inspirations, while also providing something entirely new and refreshing to the genre. I don’t think I’d be alone in calling this one of my most anticipated films of 2016 at this point either.
Midnight Special is set to hit theatres on March 18th, 2016.
