Ghostbusters isn’t the only successful franchise slated for an update with an all-female cast: The Hunger Games director Gary Ross has been assembling a team of talented ladies for an Ocean’s Eleven spinoff, with Sandra Bullock starring as the ex-con sister of Danny Ocean, the character played by George Clooney in the previous trilogy.

Jennifer Lawrence was rumored to be circling a role in the project, which would see her reuniting with Ross after their work on the original Hunger Games film, but it sounds like a scheduling conflict may prevent her from getting involved. Word broke last week that Cate Blanchett was in talks for the role of Bullock’s right-hand woman, and today Showbiz411 confirmed that news, along with revealing two other additions to the cast: Mindy Kaling and Helena Bonham Carter.

The idea for the spinoff reportedly came from producer Jerry Weintraub, along with Clooney and Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh. When Weintraub passed away before he could get the project off the ground, Clooney and Soderbergh picked up the torch, and things look set to move forward with a screenplay by Olivia Milch, which will see the thieves set out to steal a necklace and frame a crooked gallery owner for the crime.

As an ardent fan of heist films, I love the Ocean’s trilogy – even if the two sequels never quite lived up to the original – and I’m firmly onboard for this idea, as well, which Coming Soon indicates is operating under the working title Ocean’s Ocho, which means we can expect Bullock’s team to consist of eight thieves, as opposed to the eleven smooth-talking criminals that Clooney spearheaded in the original film.

Ross is deep in post-production on Civil War drama Free State of Jones, starring Matthew McConaughey, but is expected to begin shooting the Ocean’s spinoff sometime this fall. We’ll keep you posted as the project continues to firm up.
