Monday, Monday: Weird Car Chase Sequences

If you’re like me and live in a traffic-heavy city like Los Angeles, Mondays are the day I tend to daydream most about being in a film-style car chase; blowing through surface streets as fast as I wanted (without hurting anyone, of course) and crash the crap out stuff set to some seriously fun music.

However, I never envisioned that music to be the 1966 hit “Monday, Monday” by The Mamas And The Papas.

Enter The Other Guys

Released in 2010, The Other Guys stars Will Ferrell as Det. Allen Gamble, a mellow forensic accountant for the NYPD and Mark Wahlberg as his hot-tempered partner Det. Terry Hoitz, aka “The guy who shot Derek Jeter.”

In the middle of investigating a scaffolding permit violation made by multi-billionaire David Ershon (Steve Coogan), the guys uncover a huge Enron-like scandal involving a company called Lendl Global…and that’s where it gets fun.

In one of the best and weirdest car chases ever put on film, Gamble and Hoitz have picked up Ershon and quickly find themselves trying to escape Roger Westley (Ray Stevenson) and his group of mercenaries hired by Lendl’s CEO to make sure Ershon makes good on the $32 million he owes the company.

Did I mention the chase car is a PRIUS? Yeah.

Not since the AWESOME chase sequence with Minis in the remake of The Italian Job (also starring Wahlberg) has a car chase raised eyebrows and a strange admiration for directors who decide to go balls out and create killer car chases with cars you wouldn’t look twice at as means of a quick getaway.

“All right, let’s go. Monday morning, time to go to work.”

Kudos, Adam McKay and kudos to your stunt coordinator because THAT dude is gonna be my new best friend. This scene alone is one of the myriad of reasons The Other Guys is in my top 25 action/comedy/buddy/cop buddy films ever; I’ll go even further and say it ranks right up there with Lethal Weapon.

Don’t agree? Don’t care.

Bust out your Hot Wheels and we’ll settle it on the orange racetrack.
