Sam Rockwell can make anything likable, including a highly-skilled and violent hitman with a strange moral compass.
At least, that’s what it looks like he’s doing in Mr. Right, the newest film from screenwriter Max Landis which follows Rockwell’s slightly off-kilter hitman as he falls in love with the emotionally confused and looking-for-love Martha, played by Anna Kendrick. Unfortunately for her, the seemingly-perfect-guy also has a fairly dark secret of his own, and when his alter ago is revealed, things go a little crazy.
The first official trailer for the film has been revealed today as well. Check it out below (via Yahoo! Movies)
Here is the film’s official synopsis as well:
“Hyperactive at the best of times, Martha (Anna Kendrick; Pitch Perfect) has gone full-on manic since her latest breakup. She babbles, parties like a monster, cooks everything in sight – and is looking to do something terrible when she meets Francis (Sam Rockwell; The Way Way Back). To anyone else, Francis’s approach would come across as creepy, but Martha can’t help but be intrigued. They seem a perfect match: she’s bananas, he’s bananas… except he’s a deadly sort of bananas. He’s a professional assassin. Francis is a hitman with a cause: he unexpectedly kills the people ordering the hits. Just as Martha begins to realize her new beau wasn’t joking when he said he had to step out for a moment to shoot someone, things start heating up for Francis. His services are solicited by a dubious client who’s being sought by an equally dubious FBI agent (Tim Roth; Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs). As the bodies pile up, Martha needs to decide whether to flee or join in the mayhem.”
Fans of Landis’ previous work will be able to pick out his usual tone and character quirks in here, but as someone who enjoyed American Ultra last year, which this looks somewhat, loosely similar to, that’s not a bad thing in my opinion. Both Kendrick and Rockwell have more-than-enough charisma to share as well, and their pairing here (despite the obvious age difference) sounds like a comedy match made in movie Heaven.
With zany action littered throughout, and screwed-up-characters-with-hearts-of-gold, Mr. Right just looks like a hell of a lot of fun, and something we might desperately need this Spring. Especially with all of the blockbuster, tentpole films that will be coming out both before and after its April release date.
Mr. Right is set to hit theatres on April 8th.
