Up until this point, when it comes to DC’s Justice League movie, all signs seem to be pointing towards Darkseid, the ruler of Apokolips, being the main villain. Aside from his high ranking in the DC comics, the character was heavily hinted at in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with director Zack Snyder and co. even going so far as to burning his Omega symbol into the ground, during one of Bruce Wayne’s many strange dreams in the film.

However, just one week after the film was released, DC unveiled a deleted scene from the movie titled “Communion” that featured Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor meeting with a hologram of an unknown alien creature following the climactic battle between Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Doomsday.

The rumor mill began running almost instantly, with one of the most popular fan theories identifying the unknown villain as none other than Steppenwolf from the DC comics, who is Darkseid’s uncle and leads the army on Apokolips, despite not looking anything like the character from the comics. Like at all.

About the only thing that was clear from the clip was that the mystery character was not Darkseid. That at least seemed certain.

Now, Birth.Movies.Death.  is reporting that contrary to popular belief, that character is in fact Steppenwolf, and will be the main villain in Justice League. That’s right, not Darkseid. Unlike in the comics though, in which Steppenwolf is a member of the New Gods and wields a cool-looking energy axe, it looks like Snyder won’t be incorporating too much of the character’s original components from the comics this time around, aesthetically at least.

The report goes on to state that while Steppenwolf isn’t quite as powerful as some of the other rumored DC villains for the film, his contentious history with Darkseid could be what leads to him invading Earth with his Parademon hordes, that require the Justice League members to turn to help from a “dead friend.” Wow. Wonder who that could be…

Apparently, Darkseid will still have a presence in the film before appearing in full form at the end of the movie, similar to Thanos’ presence in the MCU it sounds like. All of the other DC films though, including The Flash and Aquaman all take place in real time for the most part, so it sounds like Darkseid’s plan and full role in the DCCU will have to wait until Justice Leagle Part 2 and possibly even after to be revealed. For now though, depending on this report’s accuracy, it looks like we may know the main  villain in Justice League after all.
