NBC Moves Forward With Neil Patrick Harris-Hosted Variety Show

By October 27, 2014

I know you’ve been asking yourself, “When will I get an awesome variety show hosted by Neil Patrick Harris?” Now NBC is close to answering that question.

In an official press release sent out by the network, NBC confirms they’ve ordered ten episodes of what’s been described as the “U.S. version of ITV’s U.K. hit show ‘Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway,” an hour-long variety show hosted by comedy pranksters Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (below), features “comedy sketches, musical numbers, hidden camera pranks on celebs, [and] appearances by A-list stars.” The show will be filmed live in front of a studio audience from ITV U.K.’s American counterpart, ITV Studios America, with five-time Emmy winner and all-around awesome dude Neil Patrick Harris taking the reins.

Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Late Night Programming for NBC Entertainment said:

All of us here at NBC have been dying to work with Neil, as we’ve watched him brilliantly host the Tonys and Emmys. This series will suit his extraordinary talents perfectly. He is a versatile and thrilling talent for us to welcome into the NBC family.

And if you’re wondering if NPH himself is down (and who wouldn’t be?), he himself says that when he watched the original incarnation of the show, he “…couldn’t stop smiling. Now that I’ve seen many seasons, my face hurts. It’s a game changer. Nothing like this has been done before, and its unique structure fits right into my random skill set. I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and have some fun!”

If you need an idea about what to expect, here’s Ant and Dec pranking the hell out of Gordon Ramsay earlier this year while shooting an episode of the U.S. hit, “Masterchef.”

If the format will be the same as “Takeaway” but not CALLED “Takeaway” (NBC hasn’t said what the show will be called), I wonder if NPH will do the “End of the Show Show” stuff because Ant and Dec are MASTERS of that.

Sadly for Angelenos, this show is looking to shoot in New York. But seeing how familiar Harris is with the city, having worked on Broadway in between films and hit shows (like “HIMYM”) since his “Doogie Howser M.D.” days and having just finished his Tony Award-winning run as Hedwig in “Hedwig and The Angry Inch,” I’m happy with wherever he goes…because he is hilarious.

And for you Ant and Dec fans, you’ll be happy to know that the duo will sit as executive producers alongside Adelson, Harris, and Siobhan Greene with ITV Studios America producing.  No production date or working title has been set as of yet but until then, here are two of my favorite Little Ant and Dec segments I’ll share with you.

Their “dinner date” with Mila Kunis:

And of course, their hard-hitting (and ADORABLE) interview with Russell Brand:

I have REALLY high hopes for this show! How about you? I’d LOVE to hear from the Ant and Dec fans out there!
