Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ Film Likely to Feature Ellen Ripley’s Return

By February 26, 2015

When the news broke that Neill Blomkamp would be directing the next film in the ‘Alien’ franchise, it seemed like the default reaction across the internet was somewhere between “glee” and “ecstasy.” Now, fans have an even stronger reason to anticipate the new film: the return of Ellen Ripley, and Sigourney Weaver back in the role that made her famous.

According to a new interview conducted by the UK’s Sky Movies, Weaver and Blomkamp sat down to discuss their new film Chappie when things eventually got around to the Xenomorph in the room: the Alien film. See what they had to say in the video below.

While the video doesn’t exactly confirm that Weaver has signed on the dotted line for the project, it’s very easy to see that she’s extremely enthusiastic about the possibility of giving the series a “proper” send-off. The way that Blomkamp himself describes the continuity basically seems to mean that the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection will be cast aside to give the character a more fitting conclusion, which will likely not make even the most hardened Alien fan very sad. Those two entries are generally seen as the weakest of the bunch, and it makes a lot of storytelling sense to instead give the “#3” spot in the sequence to a more grounded, less bizarre film.

Weaver has always been very invested in the development of Ripley’s character, most recently giving the developers behind last year’s video game Alien: Isolation some insight into her dialogue, and what she expected from Ripley’s daughter, who was the main character in that game. While the Alien franchise is home to stunning visuals and lavish production design, the films were always anchored by the human, relatable, and simply bad ass presence of Ellen Ripley. It’s about time that audiences got to see her again.
