A few weeks ago, next year’s Thor: Ragnarok went from sounding like one of Marvel’s strangest upcoming films, to one of their most promising with the confirmation of several cast additions, including Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, and more, in addition to who each of the new actors would be playing in the film. Basically, Jeff Goldblum will be playing one of the oldest beings in the MCU, who’s really tall, blue, and has white hair. Yes, you just got a big dumb smile on your face, and so did I.
The film’s plot is still being kept under wraps though, and fans still aren’t even entirely sure how true to the original Ragnarok comic book storyline the film is planning on staying, or what role Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner will be playing in it. Though, we do have our theories.
Now, JoBlo claims to have gotten their hands on some new character and plot details for the film, and while none of this is confirmed and should be treated as only speculation for the time being, the site has a fairly solid track record when it comes to these things, so I’m gonna issue a minor spoiler warning just to be safe.
The site is reporting that similar to previous reports and rumors, Thor: Ragnarok will indeed be combining elements from both the original titular comic book story and the iconic Planet Hulk storyline as well. While the details surrounding how both Thor and Hulk ends up on the mysterious planet are still unknown, the report states that The Hulk will indeed be seen fighting in gladitorial matches run by none other than Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster, with Hulk sporting his iconic one-shoulder armor from the comic book run as well.
The report also reveals that Hulk won’t be the only one receiving a minor makeover as well, stating that fans should expect to see Hemsworth’s Thor with a shaved head for a portion of the film, though the circumstances behind how he loses his golden locks are still unknown. In adddition, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie will apparently be sporting a much different look than her character’s often blonde-haired warrior look from the comics, with the live-action iteration sporting heavy war paint on her face similar to that of a Native American warrior.
As for the main plot of the movie, it seems like Marvel is keeping this one under heavy lock and key for the time being, with the report only revealing that it will follow the God of Thunder as he hunts to find the ultimate weapon, to stop Ragnarok and reset the world.
Similar to Captain America: Civil War as well, the third installment in the Thor franchise is sounding less like a by-the-numbers Thor movie, and much more like a team-up film than anything else, with a larger scale and cast than a majority of the other standalone outings from Marvel studios. With the exceptional Taika Waititi at the helm though, I’d be excited for Thor: Ragnarok no matter what, but it sounds like the film may contain more surprises for fans than they may have been expecting. After all, if this report turns out to be true, who would have ever thought we’d actually see Ruffalo’s Hulk in his Planet Hulk gear?
Thor: Ragnarok is set to hit theatres on November 3rd, 2017.
