Yesterday, the nominations were announced for the upcoming 86th Annual Academy Awards, and while a lot of them aligned with expectations, there were a few outliers that sort of shocked us. The people at JoBlo (via FirstShowing) have taken it upon themselves to create a reel celebrating the movies, actors, effects, and more that they thought should have been nominated by the AMPAS. Check it out below:
Sometimes it’s tough to take people seriously when they talk about Oscar snubs. (And yes, I’m totally aware of the irony of that statement, considering I just wrote a piece about that very thing yesterday.) But when people start shouting things like, “But this movie DESERVED to be nominated!” and “This movie not only deserves to get a nomination, it deserves to WIN!”, I just want to pull them aside and tell them to bring it down a notch.
First of all, it’s just an awards show. Hitchcock never won an Oscar for Best Director, so it’s not always the greatest indicator of what the “best” thing of any given year is, anyway. And second of all, who are you – imaginary person I’m talking about – to indignantly decree that such and such film “deserves” anything? Last time I checked, the process of processing a piece of art was personal, and while critics and people who see hundreds of movies a year will always have a better basis of comparison from which to judge, it’s still a subjective process.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that this video is a good way to go about things if you’re disappointed with the way the nominations turned out. It’s probably a better tactic to shift the discussion to films that you think deserve more attention in a constructive and positive way instead of shouting and ALL CAPS-ing your way through the Twittersphere. And remember – at the end of the day, the Oscars is just an awards show.
