Next summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse will serve as a conclusion to the trilogy that began with First Class and continued in Days of Future Past. But while this particular tale is coming to an end, the X-Men franchise won’t be off the big screen for long. While spin-offs like Deadpool and Gambit, along with the third Wolverine film, will serve to give fans the mutant fix they need, according to a report from ScreenRant (via Montreal Journal) plans are underway for Bryan Singer to film another X-Men movie that is set for release in 2018.
We’ve known for a while that Fox was planning something for 2018, as they announced a full release schedule back when Days of Future Past was ramping up its promotion. Of course, this schedule also included an X-Force movie that is still going nowhere and a Fantastic Four sequel that…uh…that’s not happening. That schedule also did NOT include Deadpool or Gambit, not to mention the New Mutants film currently in develoment, so apparently sometimes plans in Hollywood can change. Shocking, I know. But this mystery film for 2018 seemed to always stick around in their plans, and now we sort of know why. More X-Men films from Bryan Singer? Yes, please, and thank you.
With the success of Days of Future Past and the probable big numbers Apocalypse will bring in, continuing the franchise is a no-brainer. After all, there are over 50 years worth of comics from which to draw inspiration. This is why movie studios love comic book movies, and few franchises can promise the longevity of the X-Men. With its ever-changing roster, Fox can keep churning these things out for years to come (just like Marvel Studios can do with the Avengers franchise). Even though Apocalypse will bring certain storylines to a close, it can also function as a bit of a reboot. With characters like Jean Grey and Storm being recast for the film, the franchise can continue with the new actors while also introducing new characters. It’s been rumored that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are already signed on for a fourth film. With Wolverine 3 purported to be Hugh Jackman’s final turn as Wolverine, we could see the introduction of his successor in 2018, whether it be another Logan or a different character assuming the mantle. Plus, assuming both their solo films do well, Fox could bring in characters like Deadpool and Gambit (and would obviously want to do so because money). The possibilities are about as endless as they get.
Basically, if you wanted another reason to be excited about X-Men: Apocalypse, here you go. Not only will it wrap up the story that began in First Class, but it will serve as the start of another phase (there’s that word again!) of the franchise. This thing’s going to be HUGE. Here’s hoping it’s also, you know, good.
X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27, 2016.
