Nicolas Winding Refn has solidified himself as possibly the most controversial and divisive filmmaker of his generation. With his newest film, The Neon Demon, he’s gone down routes onscreen as well that I don’t think audiences ever thought they’d see, forcing some people to either love it (myself included) and some to hate it. Though, that’s basically the deal with all of his films at this point, after more recent outings like Drive and Only God Forgives, especially.
About the last thing that you’d think Refn would ever want to make though, based on his work onscreen and his offscreen persona, would be a big studio film, like a comic book movie. During a recent interview though, Refn revealed that he would like to make one after all, much to basically everyones’ surprise.
While speaking with Business Insider, Refn revealed that he would have liked to have directed the Wonder Woman film for DC, but since that already has a director, revealed another female-led project he’d want to helm:
“God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun. I just don’t know when it’s going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity. What ones are left? You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”
Okay, I’m just gonna go right out on a limb and say that this is never going to happen, and not because it isn’t a good idea, but because I seriously doubt a studio would ever feel comfortable enough to give Refn creative control over an expensive comic book movie, one that unlike his more recent films, would be marketed for a large audience. This wouldn’t be like Tarantino doing a Deadpool movie, this would be more like Lars von Trier doing a Wonder Woman movie.
With that being said, I’m just going to say that I now desperately want this to happen anyways. Not even because I’m all that interested in it, but more because I really want to see what a Refn-directed superhero movie would look like. With Batgirl rumored to be one of the female DC characters possibly introduced in the Harley Quinn spin-off movie, the possibilities for a Batgirl solo film aren’t all that inconceivable. Whether or not a director like Nicolas Winding Refn would be brought in to make it though, is an entirely different story.
