With Deadpool currently enjoying the celebration of a lifetime at the box office right now, breaking records for both February and rated R movies left and right, the Merc with a Mouth has finally received the kind of recognition and adaptation that he’s been waiting for. The fact that the movie is really good too, just makes this even better.
However, after recent comments and rumors seemed to indicate that there might be another alternate, director’s cut of the film released at some point down the line, director Tim Miller has officially confirmed that there will be no alternate versions of the film on the blu ray or DVD.
While speaking at Collider‘s IMAX screening of the film, Miller said the following about the rumored possibilities:
“I don’t wanna be all Joss Whedon on you, but no there’s not [a director’s cut]… There are some deleted scenes that have some extra stuff, but I’m pretty happy with this cut. I like it.”
As someone who has seen the film, I honestly don’t see the need for a director’s cut anyways. The film is about as solid and honest of a Deadpool adaptation as you could get, with more than enough violence, references, foul language, and sex to go around. Miller did confirm that there would be some deleted scenes included on the blu ray release though, specifically some extended moments that were cut out from the theatrical version:
“There’s some stuff on the DVD extras, I had a little more workshop fight in there that I liked—that’s the beat that we were talking about, [Simon’s] like, ‘Tim it’s violent enough, please’ and I’m like, ‘Oh no but man when he stomps on his face it’s awesome,’ and Simon’s like, ‘No we’ve got enough.’ (laughs)”
Making his feature directorial debut here, Miller seems to have had more freedom with this project than most moviegoers and even those involved in the industry may have expected. The creative ingenuity is what makes the film truly excel though, and because of it, Deadpool is able to be the film we all wanted it to be.
Deadpool is in theatres everywhere now.
