When J.J. Abrams and co. rebooted the Star Trek universe back in 2009, they did so while also paying homage to the classic series and films that had come before, including a small role from the original Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy. The actor went on to reprise his role again briefly in the not as beloved Star Trek: Into Darkness, and now following Mr. Nimoy’s unfortunate passing last year and the new direction that the film franchise is planning on taking – is it possible that some of the other classic actors could return to the Trek world one more time?
Unfortunately, it looks like we can cross one of those names off the list, as despite previous rumors pinning him to a cameo in the film, William Shatner will NOT be reprising his role as Captain Kirk in Beyond, the vetern actor has revealed, likely to the disappointment of all of you Trek fans out there.
While recently speaking with SFX Magazine, Shatner revealed that while the idea of him returning in the new film had probbably come up once or twice, nothing ever “substantial” has ever come his way in relation to it:
“It would have been interesting to see what their fertile imaginations could have done with somebody who is 20 years older than when Captain Kirk died [in Star Trek Generations] and how they would have explained the difference in appearance. But that never came up. I’m sure they must have thought of it one time or another but I never had a substantial conversation about replaying the role.”
The idea of Shatner reappearing in one of the new films has been rumored ever since the 2009 reboot, and with the new film apparently resembling the original series and films much more than its two predecessors, it’s easy to see where the idea managed to gain some real steam, but it looks like we still don’t know when, or if, Shatner will ever return to the onscreen Trek world again.
This year does however mark the 50th anniversary of Trek, and while nothing has been confirmed as of yet, it would seem like a bit of a missed opportunity if CBS, Paramount, and the other parties involved don’t find some way to bring Shatner back as the role one more time, as well as the other captains. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have already signed on for a fourth Trek film though, so while Shatner will not be appearing in the upcoming installment, hope still remains that we might see the OG Captain Kirk return to the big screen, at least someday.
Star Trek Beyond is set to hit theatres on July 22nd.
